Clearly Classy Events: Spring 2021

Treya Evans

Overview of Organization:

Johnell owns the company Clearly Classy Events. After learning about the field and acquiring experience working at a venue, she started her company. Over time Clearly Classy Events has grown in popularity and now has an amazing reputation in Austin, TX. It has won many awards like “The best of weddings in 2015” from The Knot and Wedding Wire. The organization's mission statement is “Clearly Classy Events aims to create one-of-a-kind events for every client through a skilled, experienced process that makes planning events enjoyable.” (Huebner, 2021). The objective of Clearly Classy Events is to make every event special for their clients and the client’s guests.

Intern Responsibilities:

     Job Description:

While interning at Clearly Classy Events you learn many different important skills to be an event planner. The intern will complete different in-office tasks. These include (but not limited to) working on social media pages, working on the company’s website, helping Johnell make event binders of different things she might need for the event, etc. The intern will also complete out-of-office work. This means that most Saturdays will have some sort of event that you must attend. While at the event you have the responsibility of helping with everything that needs to happen before the event. This could mean setting up the tables and chairs or designing and making the centerpieces. Anything that needs to be done will be done by you and with the help of Johnell. Another out-of-office work you might attend is client meetings. These meetings could be anything from tasting to discussing venues.

Requirements and qualifications needed to fulfill this position:

The requirement you need for this internship is to have some prior knowledge in the field. This could mean a prior internship, studying in the RPTS field, or even event volunteer experience. Johnell will teach you many things, but it is beneficial for you and her if you have some knowledge under your belt.

     Benefits and Opportunities:

Johnell has been an amazing help to further my knowledge in the event industry. Johnell gives her interns many benefits that other internships might not offer. First, she is willing to teach you a short lesson on anything you might have questions about. For example, if you want to know about how to budget for events, she is willing to spend extra time on that subject. Second, Johnell slowly gives you more and more responsibilities while at events, so you aren’t completely on your own, but will slowly become more comfortable making decisions. Third, Johnell allows you to attend client meetings. This is very useful because you learn how to talk to clients, and what important things you should focus on when with a client. Also attending client meetings helps you network because you meet other people who also work in the event industry like caters or venue managers. This internship is also slightly paid; you receive compensation for every event you do, but not in-office work.

      Achievements:

New skills and knowledge are acquired throughout the internship. You slowly learn new skills large or small while working for Johnell. The best way to learn how to be an event planner is to be hands-on and do it. This semester working under Johnell has given me confidence that I will succeed in this career. Every weekend while at this internship I have been able to work a different event. Working each event gives you new knowledge each time because even if it’s the same type of event all other aspects are different. There is a new layout, new decorations, a new timeline, etc. Therefore, there might be something I need to do at one event that I had never done before at other events. The other knowledge that I think is the most useful was the optional client meetings. Talking to and meeting new clients is the second biggest part of the job. Therefore, knowing how to talk to them and showing that you are confident about what you’re talking about is very important. You are trying to provide your service to them, and you need to know how to do this successfully. While at Clearly Classy Events I think I know how to do that. I think anyone that wants to gain more knowledge and experience would benefit from doing this internship.
